Butler Homeless Initiative Changes Name!

The Butler County Homeless Initiative is changing our name, but not our mission. We are now Refuge in the Storm El Dorado (RISE).

The work that we do in Butler County goes beyond being “just a shelter”. We often work with clients to help them avoid becoming unhoused in the first place, offer guidance based on individual needs and chart out a path to success. We help to acquire ID's, assist with housing applications, resumes and employment applications. In addition we partner with other community organizations for addiction treatment and mental health care. But when the storms of life become too strong, we are there to be a Refuge, and to help them RISE again and get back on their feet.

For some, the word “homeless” conjures up images of lazy people looking for a handout. However, many of our clients are of the 59 percent of hardworking people in America who are just ONE paycheck away from Homelessness. All it takes is one bad turn of fate and they end up without a home. We work with our guests to provide hope, restore their dignity, and to get them back on their feet.

Our new name conveys the hope we will instill and the restoration of human dignity for every deserving person who needs just a bit of help to become self-reliant once again.

Our mission is to provide refuge to those in need in Butler County, Kansas.

Homelessness is not only found within large cities…

It affects small towns and rural America as well. Often times homelessness is not a choice, but a result of unfortunate circumstances that lead to a homeless life and a feeling of hopelessness.

Refuge in the Storm El Dorado provides a refuge for those in need who have no other place to go. RISE offers a hot meal, toiletries, a shower voucher at the local YMCA, the use of a laundry facility, and the friendly support of an experienced staff to anyone reaching out to RISE for homeless services.

It does not matter how people end up at the Shelter. RISE staff are here to help our unhoused community members. The guests also receive information on mental health treatment, resources on drug and alcohol addiction, housing and job searches.

The RISE vision is to end homelessness in Butler County. That begins with providing shelter for those in need and direction for those willing to make a change.

If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

John 3:17-18
